Script of Eclipse Interview

Amazing

This is pretty much the best paragraph that I have ever written. And, I will argue to the death that writing in science demands just as much creativity and flare as any other type of writing. Unfortunate that most people think that science writing is boring. Well, sometimes it is that, but it does take skill and creativity to say what you want to "say" in clear, accurate, and interesting ways.

The innovative strength of this proposal is not in the advent of cutting-edge technology or novel laboratory techniques. Rather, its strength and potential for moving the field forward rests on the importance of the questions posed, along with the comprehensive experimental design and creative application of accepted laboratory procedures for addressing these questions. Both historically and recently, a great deal of effort has been devoted to studying airway function after exercise in asthmatic subjects; this has occurred at the exclusion of investigating airway function during exercise. The focus of this proposal is to assess, in detail, the pulmonary mechanical responses to exercise in asthmatic subjects under conditions of heterogeneous pre-exercise airway function. The innovative novelty of this proposal is in the detailed assessment of pulmonary system function during exercise following altered (improved and worsened) airway function in this important group of patients.

Canada 2

As if "Rage" wasn't enough for an energy frink - Jill is feeling the Rage Wrath from hers on the way to Kashse.

Sitting in a sculpture in Montreal

Zoom in on jill's face.

Molly kept on doing dumb things while trying to rent bikes. Notice the long line of rental bikes. They were every couple blocks. a very good system there. One of the nicest things about Montreal was that there are no tall buildings (except for downtown) ad therefore it is not a congested city like New York.

I found a "Bedazzler" jewel on my shirt in the middle of Montreal for no reason, on the inside - how it got there? only God knows: I was Bedazzled! as you can see from the Lord's light a'shining down upon my head...

Jill in Fountain - Montreal

There are bike paths and rental bikes all over Montreal

The front of Dorian's apartment: very strange and artificial with fake plants and concrete, but charming in a strange way

I set my scope up on automatic so that it would take a picture every 30 seconds at Kahshe, then we went down to the point for a half-hour, and i came back up and sure enough we got some pictures like this!

Mulan Remix

On the Road - Eight

On the Road Again...where on where to begin. I am sitting on the couch at home watching City Slickers; a very funny Billy Crystal movie about leaving home and being on the road or should I say saddle on a horse. They have new experiences and are changed; that is what the road does to you, change and transformation.
So I and the youth group got home from Atlanta after a very successful mission trip. We met many homeless people and many helpers of the the needy. We learned and helped and came home.
Hannah was in Virginia where she interviewed at Arlington Hospital for a job on the Oncology ward. On Monday of our mission trip she started home and got called after 150 miles that she got the job. So she didn't turn around for the next step of the process but continued on home and has to go back to the hospital on Monday or is it Sunday on the 21st. Then she will come back home and then go back to star work I think the next week. Meanwhile, Holland and Jamie and kids got home like Sunday night/Monday morning after their long trip, They stayed the night somewhere because they also were driving through major western storms but are back at work. Let's see, York and all made it home in their newly trans missioned van where Erin started her new job the next day. She drove to work in her old Prius—still working.
Noah and Jill headed east to NYC in their 2002 silver GTI diesel. Noah proudly reports that it got about, what was it, 51 mpg. Now, if it will only keep starting and working that would be swell.
After Jill graduated from her Dharma Yoga program, very fine, they drove to Han's new apartment where there is plenty of room. Then up to Montreal. Noah and Jill now have the record of being stopped at the border for the longest period, an hour and a half because Noah was packing a pocket knife. Danger Josh! Now they are at Kahshe so they left the car at the dock and went to the island in the boat. Good move Noah. ON the road and the lake.
Hmm...Sally got home today at noon after driving Finn to Ann Arbor, MI yesterday. He started his summer job with ID Tech and had to be there this morning. Sally left there at eleven p.m. After having pirogi and chicken wings. Drove awhile and slept, drove and slept. They didn't leave until one yesterday because Sally was in court all morning—posing as a vicious criminal. Remember her traffic ticket for speeding and tailgating. Now, and here is the ironic part, anyone who rides with Sally driving notices that she goes about 60 mph on the highway and keeps 100 yards between her and the car in front. Anyone driving with her in the passenger seat is occasionally reminded of this, so it is true she really doesn't speed or tailgate. So, after another long day on the road she is home. After all, she says, it is only 8 hours each way.
This weekend, Hilary trekked up to NJ for a highly orthodox Jewish wedding. She sent a number of pictures and it looked like an amazing wedding; festive, energy, fun dancing, food and then on the road home again.
It looks to be a very active summer, I will try to keep up. I am sure I have already forgotten some things.

On The Road With the Haverkamps - Seven

I wrote this piece last Monday, and decided it was way past time to post it; obviously I am way behind...this family does way way too much traveling. we are supporting the National dept with our tax money from gasoline. So here is this old post, and I ill try to catch up tomorrow. Monday morning, I open my eyes to a sea of windows, a wooden floor with lines on it, a balcony, a large vaulted ceiling and 25 other people on mattresses on the floor—yep, it is Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and this is the first morning of the DOOR Atlanta mission trip. We packed up the old beat up battered dragon blue Honda van with seven youth group members and headed down here after
church and a slice of pizza.
But to catch up a bit; Sally and Hannah and Evergreen got home Sunday morning at 4:15 a.m. Hannah drove the whole way, like a machine. Never stopping, music playing, eyes on the road, not talking...a machine. That was after a long day of helping Seth and Kat and girls to pack and move into their new house. Several trips were made by truck, van, car and all back and forth and then dinner at June's house. They were all in church, however, Sunday morning for a stirring worship service.
Meanwhile, Hollands van and Yorks van meet up somewhere in Colorado, oh yes, Red Rocks. We were there several years ago during a lightning storm. Lightning hit the large red rock face near visitor building; a resounding boom crash and dust and stone flying off the rock wall. Quite spectacular, really. So nice that they could catch up in Colorado. They also spent time a the house in Denver, doing some work together.
York sent a phone picture of puff clouds over the Colorado high plains later in the evening. Beautiful and mysterious. They were driving through a storm of lightning, solid for hours. Typical of the wild west. I love the west and those storms and those skys and clouds. Nothing like it.
So as of this writing, (Monday afternoon at 3:00), I guess they are still on the road. Holland Jamie and kids are probably working on their house in Denver. Hans is home form his conference in Baltimore, having flown into Burlington Saturday morning, and I am here. Guess that's all for the Haverkamps on the Road.

GoodEats: Orange Glazed Chicken Wings

Ingredients

  • 12 whole chicken wings
  • 1 (6-ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Directions

Place a 6-quart saucepan with a steamer basket and 1 inch of water in the bottom, over high heat, cover and bring to a boil.

Remove the tips of the wings and discard or save for making stock. Using kitchen shears, or a knife, separate the wings at the joint.

Place the wings into the steamer basket, cover, reduce the heat to medium and steam for 10 minutes. Remove the wings from the basket and carefully pat dry.

Lay the wings out on a cooling rack set in a half sheet pan lined with paper towels and place in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Replace the paper towels with parchment paper. Roast on the middle rack of the oven for 20 minutes. Turn the wings over and cook another 20 minutes or until meat is cooked through and the skin is golden brown.

During the last 20 minutes of cooking the chicken, place the orange juice concentrate, hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and red pepper flakes into a small saucepan, stir to combine and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat.

Reduce the mixture to about 1/2 cup, approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool at least 5 minutes.

Remove the wings from the oven and transfer to a large mixing bowl along with the glaze and toss to coat. Serve warm.

On the Road With the Haverkamps -Six

Thursday morning, seven-thirty a.m., Sally, Hannah and Evergreen eat breakfast, prepare pillows, coffee into thermos, extra food, clothing in bags and then jump into the Fit at eight and head east. Destination- Baltimore. Hans is there for a conference at which he is presenting at today or tomorrow having flown in fro Burlington, VT several days ago. He and Hilary have been able to hang out and have had a sushi nice time. In addition, Hilary got to see Han's technique in picking up the waitress at the restaurant. So, about ten hours later, the Fit with its three occupants threads its way through Baltimore traffic and find Hilary and Hans. I don't believe they saw any murders on the way which is surprising because Hilary says they happen all the time. Tomorrow they will go over to Seth and Kat's and help them move into their house. Hannah, when she moves back to Virginia for her nursing job which is yet to come through will be living in the basement or lower level or garden level of the house., Hopefully they all will like it and it will work out swell.
This evening, still Thursday, Holland, Jamie, Clive and Sefie loaded into their van and headed west to Colorado. “Wait a minute,” you say, “Isin't that where York and family are?” Why yes, that is true. Holland and family are driving the 1600 + miles to go to Denver and check on their house there. It is for sale if you are interested and they need to check it out and do any repairs, plus see Jamies mom and of course see Denver and Colorado, which we all love,
Today, York and all went to Colorado Springs and the zoo and the Garden of the Gods. It sounds like they really loved the Garden. Fern was drawing pictures and writing. That's the kind of thing that happens when you travel—On the Road With the Havekamps.
