i rolled into the parking spot at quarter before midnight, tired and famished from a twelve hour shift, and saw him standing there, a tall man in a golf cap, one of the many who loiter in front of my corner 24 hour convenience store. i braced myself for the inevitable begging or leering that i still attempt to become accustomed to and remind myself that i have plenty of copies of the baltimore homeless shelters brochures i carry around with me for moments such as this, although normally they occur while polluting the air at the insanity-provoking endlessly long red lights.

his clothes and his skin are blacker than a lyricist's ink but his countenance is among the brightest, if not the absolute brightest, i've seen among adults when his entirely toothless mouth opens up like a three-quarters moon and he jests, "I LIKE THEM SOCKS!!!!!" i am wearing plaid knee socks under pin-striped pedal pushers and black hightop converse. he may have a disability (one may also wonder the same about me given the description of my outfit!), he seems harmless, and his smile is infectious. he is exuberant; he is genuine. he is like a child. a moon-child.

i walk into the store and as i order my turkey sandwich off the touch-screen computer, i cannot help but break into laughter over and over. i glance toward the window and see him peering in, moon still at three-quarters light. of course he has to come in when he sees me glance over, as if i was beckoning and giving a "come hither" stare. once in, he continues cajoling, ne'er one tooth in evidence despite the widest smile i do believe i've ever seen. but i've learned to self-protect; vigilance comes with living in baltimore, you see, and so i lingered near the counter, which somehow felt more supportive than the magazine rack or open space, while waiting for my sandwich.

another customer enters the store and offers the bright moon man, his "buddy," a pack of smokes. mr. moon invites him to his birthday party, and the check out girl giggles with a subtle sigh, "you always invite us to your party." the smoke buddy asks when the birthday is, and mr. moon says, "july 24th." smoke buddy says, "you're on!"

mr. moon talks about what a smoker he is, everyone calls him "smokey," and he's too "hard-headed" to stop, only a bull dozer could do him some good. i lean across the counter and ask the lazy-eyed check out girl, "he's harmless, right?" and over a gruff voice singing about a cracklin' girl named rosie, she assures me in signature bal'more twang that he's harmless, lives with his father up the street, is famous around these parts, and quite a help at the store. the sandwich maker bags my turkey sandwich and i exit the store, my corner convenience store, thanking the baltimore dark and dank night that i have finally had the fortune to be shone upon by mr. moon, and therefore, be one step closer to the inner circle of quirkiness that makes this city something worth surviving.

In case you don't know, racism is a big theme in X-Men. Some people, like Magneto, think that mutants are an evolved species and want to kill all humans. Others fight for mutant rights as humans. Check this out:

In a recent case of "life imitating art," this question [of whether mutants are human] is one Marvel's lawyers are actually discussing with the IRS [in real life]. Whether or not mutants are considered human could have a big impact on the X-Men in both the real and comic book world. The question that has to be answered is, should mutants be considered human?

Marvel is trying to convince the IRS that the X-Men and mutants should not be considered human. The reason is, toys made in other countries and shipped into the US are taxed, but figures of non-humans have lower taxes. If mutants can be classified as non-humans, they can save some money on X-Men figures.

ok, so i fell in love with this song this week, and i really think we can pull it off as a christmas offering this week! i know we have enough talent and wherewithal to do it!

we can definitely do vocals, violin, flute, guitar, and didn't frits recently pick up the harpsichord?? york can do drums, etc etc... so, i think everyone should start learning their part and then we'll practice when we get to the mountain house. it will be so great.

Meteor

Near the end of the Milky Way Timelapse movie, there is a bright streak towards the right of the screen. Turns out this is my first photo of a meteor, probably, as David Fields points out, from the Coma Berenices shower: "I agree with you guys -- it's a meteor. But the path is 90 degrees off of the path for the Geminiads, so it's not one of the Geminiad meteors.The Coma Berenices meteor shower contributes fast meteors, it is seen from Dec. 8-21, and it lies along the radiant of your meteor, so I think that you captured an image of one of those meteors. This was one of those showers discovered by radio astronomers (the Harvard Radio Meteor Project).The Coma Berenices constellation is a neat one and contains about 7 Messier objects. That's probably the only constellation named after a real person!"

Every few months or so, the ISS travels over Tennessee and it lights up for a few minutes then dies away again. Unfortunately it traveled so far and so long that by the time it died down i didn't have the camera pointing in the right direction anymore, so you just see here a 44 second shot with sharp edges at the beginning and end of the bright line it makes. (Mom i'll explain that to you later in person). It passes right over the Coat-hanger asterism here (near the beginning of the ISS line - it is sideways).I also barely had time to set up for the event, so i actually didn't get a chance to properly focus the camera.

Canon 5D ISO 1600, 44 sec, 28 mm, f4, at TAO in Harriman, TN 12/17/11 6:40 ESTAppears 18h40m13s 3.1mag az:241.7° WSW horizon. Culmination 18h45m29s -3.1mag az:322.3 (high in the sky)

Orion Nebula

Finally got Jamie's Canon 5D into my telescope. I didn't have time to set up trekking and barely had time for a photo at all, but managed to get this one. The skies were quite dark, but not amazing. Plus Orion was just over the horizon, the worst time to photograph something because of all the light. Make sure you click on it to see the shape of the nebula. The camera has not been modified for astrophotography, therefore it is not so sensitive to the red hydrogen gas colors, so the nebula looks largely gray, but there is a bit of red in there. The nebula is the center star in Orion's sword. The outside 2 stars of the sword are in this photo as well, at either side of the picture. They look like double or triple stars at this magnification. The photo was cropped to focus on the sword.
